Our journey started in December 2015 when The Lab Eatery was born, as one of the only authentic Mediterranean restaurants in Takapuna, we aimed to achieve high quality food with a costumer experience of our home away from home.
Early 2020 we decided to change the name to Za’atar, Za’atar is a Jordanian spice which is mainly made from thyme and is cornerstone of the Jordanian culture & cuisine
Za’atar ingredients are simple yet the flavors taste is intricate and surprising, the same way we would love to present our food, simple yet enjoyable.

Ashraf and Mustafa not just brothers in knives, they are brothers in law and share a passion for creating modern Arabian and Turkish foods, food is a major part of their family and lifestyle. Throughout the years they worked hard to maintain the high quality of food our customers love by evolving our dishes and menus.

Born in Gaziantep, Turkey, lived in Tokyo, Japan for 10 years learning the art of cooking and living in Auckland, New Zealand since 2000
born to a large family with a passion for food at a young age, helping his mother and his 1st Head chef Safya prepare feasts to please the family.
